Manufacturing Process

Design and Engineering

The shape and size of the mold need to be carefully considered. Complex shapes may require more advanced manufacturing techniques and can be more difficult to produce. If the mold is too large, it may be challenging to handle and transport. And if it’s too small, it may not be suitable for mass production.
The draft angle is another important design aspect. A proper draft angle allows the product to be easily removed from the mold. Without a sufficient draft angle, the product may get stuck in the mold, which can damage both the product and the mold.
Ventilation is also crucial in the mold design. During the molding process, air can get trapped inside the mold, which can cause defects in the final product. So, we need to design proper ventilation channels to allow the air to escape.
Quality Control
Quality control is an ongoing process throughout the production of the FRP mold. We need to inspect the mold at every stage of the manufacturing process.
Before we start making the mold, we need to check the quality of the raw materials. We need to make sure the fiberglass, resin, and fillers meet the required standards. During the lay – up process, we need to check the thickness and distribution of the fiberglass and resin layers.
After the mold is cured, we need to perform a series of tests. We can use non – destructive testing methods, such as ultrasonic testing, to check for internal defects in the mold. We also need to measure the dimensions of the mold to make sure it meets the design specifications.
Environmental Factors
The environment in which the mold is made and used can also affect its quality. High humidity can cause the resin to absorb moisture, which can lead to problems like delamination and reduced mechanical properties. Extreme temperatures can also have a negative impact on the mold. For example, if the mold is exposed to very high temperatures for a long time, it can cause the resin to degrade.
When storing the mold, we need to make sure it’s in a dry and temperature – controlled environment. And during the molding process, we need to keep the working area clean to prevent dust and other contaminants from getting into the mold.
Maintenance
Proper maintenance is essential for the long – term quality of the FRP mold. After each use, we need to clean the mold thoroughly to remove any residual resin or other materials. We can use a mild detergent and a soft brush to clean the mold.

We also need to inspect the mold regularly for any signs of damage, such as cracks or scratches. If we find any damage, we need to repair it as soon as possible. Small cracks can be repaired using a suitable resin, but more severe damage may require more extensive repairs or even replacement of the mold.
